Disposable Contact Lenses Have Become A Fashion Statement.
Gone are the days of wearing the heavy glasses in frames. Those frames caused sweating on the upper portion of the nose and on the top of the ears. On top of that, the wearing of glasses in frames draws attention to one’s vision problems.
Disposable contact lenses do not reveal to other people that one’s vision needs correction. They allow a more natural appearance than glasses allow. They can even change one’s appearance without the evidence of the frames of spectacles.
The earliest contact lenses were not soft and were not as disposable as the latest in soft disposable contact lenses. Several years ago, it was a rather common sight to see people carefully brushing over the floor, looking for someone’s contact lens which had been dropped. Those old style lenses were brittle so if someone stepped on one while searching, it would surely be broken.
In today’s world, soft contact lenses are the norm. These lenses are made of polymer plastic and are flexible, feeling like gelatin when held. They are designed to allow oxygen to pass through them. For many people they are superior to any other eyesight correction methods. They are usually worn for a day and then discarded to be replaced by another lens for the next day. Even if worn for more than one day, the lenses are not kept long enough to become problematic to the eye, especially if disinfected daily.
There are some drawbacks to these daily wear soft contact lenses. They are not available for all types of vision problems. Also, they are not durable so they rip easily when handling them. Of course, a ripped lens cannot be used so some of them are thrown away without ever having been used for eyesight correction. These lenses are slightly more expensive than other options, as well.
For some athletic activities, specialized eyewear is needed to correct vision. Often the spectacles that one wears outside the sport activity are not acceptable for wear while participating in the sport. Special sports contact lenses are recommended for such situations. The use of such contact lenses diminishes the wearer’s liability for eye injuries. If glasses with frames were used, a broken frame or lens can be quite dangerous around the eye. Soft contact lenses are preferable to framed glasses.
The sports contact lenses can be tinted to allow the sports participant to see better. For example, amber colored tints enable tennis players to see the ball more clearly while a grey-green lens helps golfers to see the distant terrain more clearly. These colored lenses can contain a degree of UV protection as well, although the lens covers only a part of the eye so the part which is not covered will not get the UV protection.
The soft contact lenses are used nowadays in special effects situations. They are worn by movie actors to change the appearance of the eye. They can make an eye look as though the actor is blind or has a wild color of eye iris. Special effects contact lenses are now available for purchase on Internet sites as well as some specialty stores. As with other contact lenses, the wearer needs to take care of his eyes by using clean and disinfected lenses and not keep them in the eye for extended periods of time.
A few people are still required to wear the glasses with frames. There are some conditions which cannot be remedied by contact lenses. For the rest of us, contact lenses have become almost a part of our daily clothing. Some people would not leave home without their contacts in place.
